Certification

The CISSP exam evaluates expertise across eight security domains. (Think of domains as topics you need to master based on your professional experience and education.)

Passing the exam proves you have the advanced knowledge and technical skills to effectively design, implement and manage a best-in-class cybersecurity program.

The CISSP certification has experience requirements to ensure candidates possess a strong foundation in information security. Below there is a breakdown of the key points:

  • experience requirement – a minimum of 5 years of cumulative, paid full-time work experience in at least two of the eight domains of the CISSP Common Body of Knowledge (CBK)
  • education credit – holding a 4-year college degree in a relevant field or an approved ISC2 credential can substitute for up to one year of the work experience requirement. However, education can only cover a maximum of one year
  • Associate of ISC2 – if someone lacks the experience for CISSP certification, they can become an Associate of ISC2 by passing the exam. They can then have six years to gain the required five years of experience to qualify for the full CISSP certification
